Eligibility
SCOPE was developed not only to help children, but also as a response to the increased need for funding and support for camps in the not-for-profit sector. In an effort to provide a valuable experience for economically disadvantaged children, through the provision of "camperships", SCOPE continues its dedication to fundraising and program designs which promote camp as a complementary adjunct to formal education. Camps are chosen based on their adherence to these ideals, as demonstrated in their written materials, organizational goals or mission statements, and their expressed commitment to providing quality summer camp experiences.
Camps must demonstrate that they provide safe opportunities for their campers to benefit from an enriching, character-building and educational experience. Only residential, not-for-profit camps that are accredited by the American Camp Association's, (ACA) American Camp Association's, (ACA) Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, St. Louis, or Wisconsin Sections may apply annually for participation in SCOPE-Midwest. Sections may apply annually for participation in SCOPE-Midwest.
Camps that are accredited must meet national standards in camp operation, quality of program and facilities, staff qualifications, and health and safety.
Participating camps must verify that they:
- Have current 501c3 status as issued by the Internal Revenue Service
- Had a valid Operating Permit for the previous summer as issued by their state or local agencies
- Proof of ACA accreditation
By providing "camperships" for eligible campers, SCOPE is supporting the participating not-for-profit camps that are facing funding challenges. Despite SCOPE's success, most not-for-profit camps continue to operate well below capacity. Our goal for the future is to place a child in need in every empty bunk.
